Berkey Water Filter
The importance of having clean drinking water cannot be overstated. No one would ever argue that it’s crucial and essential to our survival. It’s the lifeblood of our planet and our bodies. It’s chock full of vital minerals and electrolytes our bodies thrive on. Water flushes out toxins and waste, lubricates our joints, helps digestion, normalizes body temperature, and so much more.
As credulous as it may sound, the city I live in still puts fluoride in the water. Many of us may have a water filter system set up in our homes which is ideal. What about traveling though? What can we do to ensure we have clean water during our vacation and holiday time?

More Than Alive is an awesome online natural healthy company that is very selective and affectionate about providing us with quality products that are beneficial and life-enhancing. One of their products is the Berkey Water Filter. The Berkey filter provides the ultimate in removing pathogens, germs, parasites, heavy metals, contaminants, fluoride, and more our water might be riddled with. Its purpose is to turn tap and outside water into the best-tasting, purest drinking water possible, all while using a natural method without the use of chemicals or complicated processes.
There are several different models and they range in size from the Travel Berkey (1.5 gallons) all the way to the Crown Berkey (6 gallons). The size required is reflective of the number of people who will be using it and if you’ll be using the water for cooking and hygiene. With the holiday season upon us and many of us traveling, I received the Travel Berkey to try out.
Traveling can mean different things to us. I have friends who love to go to resorts every Christmas. The water may be deemed questionable or unsafe to drink so they have to purchase bottled water. Others will travel to see family, who like me, may have fluoride in their water.
Let’s take a look at a few of the Travel Berkey’s attributes. It sports a high sheen 304 stainless steel finish, removes 99.99 percent of contaminants, it’s portable, the filters have a 3000-gallon life, and no plumbing is needed. It may look big and awkward but it really isn’t, it’s 18″tall and 7.5 ” wide. Assembling the system was fairly easy and I’d say it took about 45 minutes. There are a few steps to take before you can use the filter. It comes with easy-to-follow instructions and to ensure there is no contamination, you must follow them exactly. Washing your hands thoroughly before handling the Berkey’s two filters is very important. You will have to change the filters before putting them into the canister. This is done by using a gasket that’s provided and holding the filter against a water faucet; water will be forced through the filter to ensure it’s clean and ready to use.
There is an upper chamber and a lower chamber with a spigot attached. You pour cold or room-temperature water into the upper chamber and allow it to drain into the lower chamber. Because the filters are more powerful and refined than store brands, it will take a lot longer to clean the water. With the Travel Berkey, it took about 8 hours before we have delicious clean water to drink.
We will be traveling quite a bit this holiday season and the Travel Berkey fits nicely in one of our suitcases. My sister has funky-tasting water and it will be so awesome to take the Berkey and drink clean and sweet-tasting water. What a fabulous and thoughtful gift a Big Berkey would make!
