With the entrance of the 21st century, holistic medicine is being recognized and appreciated by more and more people seeking a natural or esoteric approach to overall health and as a curative source. Essential oils have been an intrinsic part of the daily lives of people for thousands and thousands of years. They have been used to heal the body, mind and spirit since Noah was a lad. Just like the good ole days, using plants and their oils as remedies, we today are returning to Mother Nature as the best alternative to healing.

Essential oils and aromatherapy have always intrigued me, but I never really took the initiative to check them out, until now. Thanks to my new resource, The Complete Aromatherapy & Essential Oils Handbook for Everyday Wellness, I’m able to glean the pure power of these healing modalities.

As I read the preface of The Complete Aromatherapy & Essential Oils Handbook for Everyday Wellness, I felt the passion and enthusiasm of the author and creator of these magic formulas. It made me want to run out into nature, collect my own herbs and craft my own recipes. Now I can with the guidance from this enlightened book. It includes 109 essential oils and more than 450 remedies and uses.

What Is an Essential Oil? Essential oils are natural, aromatic compounds found in various parts of a plant. This would include the roots, bark, stems, flowers and seeds. They are pure, concentrated, and highly sought after for their therapeutic capabilities.

I never knew that essentials oils need to be added to carrier oils as a base. They use grapeseed and sweet almond oil in these recipes because these oils are readily available. Carrier oils are deemed very important and each has their own therapeutic attributes. Their role is to help carry the oils into your skin, makes sense, right? As you read through the book, the side columns of each page are abundant with tips and cautions so you can be successful in your endeavors. I found these quite informative. For example, Tip: If you’re diffusing essential oils, (dispersing them into the air), it is neither necessary nor productive to do so for longer than 15 – 20 minutes at a time. Caution: Do not apply saro oil on or near the face of children.

Part 1 is learning about the essential oils and their uses. At the onset of the chapter, you’re given a properties table for key essential oils. Then the chapter carries on with specific uses for a plethora of oils. Did you know that Carrot Seed Oil, is uber fabulous for your skin? It kills bacteria and adds elasticity, especially with prematurely aging skin. Where can I get some! I was so amazed at all the astonishing qualities and uses the oils offer. Essential oils can be costly, so buy the best and begin with a small basic starter kit.

Part 2 is where you put the oils into real practice. They list remedies from Abrasions to Workplace stress. Seriously, this chapter covers a whole gamut of issues. For instance, if you have an issue with arthritis, a list of useful essential oils are suggested along with a workable formula.
Arthritis Oil Blend
10 drops German chamomile
7 drops geranium essential oil
5 drops birch essential oil
5 drops rosemary or plai essential oi
In a 5mL glass dropper bottle, combine all ingredients and shake well. They also offer a variation for a more potent treatment and how to use this oil blend in a bath and hot compress.

I found their Travel, Jet Lag and Motion Sickness formulas really handy and beneficial. I tried several of the recipes and I found the scents so calming and soothing to the spirit. You don’t need a lot of the formulas to notice a difference, they’re powerful, and they last a long time.

Part 3 is all about putting the essential oils to everyday use like skincare, hair care, body care, and around the home. I love this chapter and enjoyed reading through all the recipes for various skin care issues, and I made the Dew Drop Moisturizing Oil. As we age, our skins will have a drier texture out that makes us look way older than we are, this formula will definitely plump up the volume on our face and neck. Want to make your own cologne? There are several fragrant blends offered. I’m going to be making a few of them for gifts this holiday season.

I learned enough about essential oils from this book, that it’s made an impact on my life. I’m smitten with the idea of using natural oils from naturally grown plants to ease and assist ailments. It’s a beautiful way to live, they’re warm, nurturing, and comforting. If you’re interested in using essential oils as part of your first aid and home uses, then I would definitely recommend this book. I think it could be an integral instrument in easing our pain and illnesses. (Always seek professional advice first).
