Hey Jack Storybook Series

I find kids will read more if they can relate to the character or theme of a book. If the subject is boring or unremarkable, you’re going to get a lot of yawning and mind wandering. Kids love to read about and enjoy getting lost in a story about other kids and/or animals, at least in my household, so I tend to look for these subjects.

If you’re a regular reader of my posts, you may recall, I featured a series of books about an adorable little girl named Billie B. Brown. Her best friend is Jack. Well, it turns out that Jack has a series of books dedicated to his world too, and the kids soaked the stories in. The series is called Hey Jack!

Jack is a normal, charming, yet awkward little boy who has lots of interests, aspirations, and an abundance of creative imagination. Each of the nine books focuses around an event or situation where Jack has to deal with a person, an emotion, or perhaps a self-confidence issue. The stories are short and simple for young minds to grasp and ideal for ages up to 5.

The covers of the books are full of vibrant colors and images, but the inside is black and white and the kiddo’s noticed this. They never expressed this as a bad thing, just as an observation. The pictures inside the book reflect the mood and set the tone for the intended theme of the story. It shows just how Jack may be handling or not handling a particular moment.

For instance, in The Robot Blues, Jack has made a homemade robot costume and he’s very concerned whether the kids at the party will like it, so he’s feeling a bit wobbly. He’s afraid the other kids will have cooler store-bought costumes. There’s a picture of Jack in his costume and little arrows with captions are pointing to the appropriate areas on Jack’s body, eg, wobbly legs, funny tummy, and feels shy and nervous. At first glance, the kids will understand what’s going on and can resonate with Jack’s environment.

The print is large and there’s ample space between words making it easy for budding readers to see and enunciate each word if needed. We adore the Hey Jack series and look forward to reading them over and over through the years. Although it’s only autumn, I’ve already started thinking about Xmas gift ideas, and these books would really warm a child’s heart!
