Do you remember when you were a kid and asked your parents how to spell a word? What was their response? Undoubtedly, they told you to look it up in the dictionary. A dictionary is an important resource and academic asset that kids can access for a multitude of reasons. It helps children spell, enunciate, and expand their vocabulary, including pronunciations and definitions. So learning to use one effectively is to everyone’s advantage, but especially children as it will affect their future endeavors. While there are various dictionary brands on the market, Merriam-Webster is a name I grew up with. They recently updated and revised their Children’s Dictionary just in time for kids going back to school.

The Merriam-Webster Children’s Dictionary contains over 35,000 words and phrases (including 110 new words) and over 3,000 full-color photos and illustrations that make learning interesting and more enjoyable, especially for visual learners. A lot of thought went behind the inclusion of vibrant images. They are not random pretty images, but instead, images used for their accuracy, usefulness, and potential for bringing unfamiliar subjects to life, and by their capacity to expand a word definition. The words included are words students would use in talking, writing, and likely to encounter in their regular schoolwork. It’s one of the most beautifully illustrated dictionaries I’ve seen. It’s clear, easy to read print and captivating illustrations encourage exploration. It’s the perfect companion for students of all ages.
