Plant Food Recipe Book

If you’ve read some of my posts, you will know I am a raw vegan, although I cook all kinds of recipes for my family, who are not raw vegans. I personally believe there is nothing more refreshing than eating clean raw vibrant foods. I like my mind and taste buds to be stimulated so I’m always on the prowl for new and innovative recipe books. New to my collection is the elegantly crafted Plant Food recipe book.

Matthew Kenney is a raw food chef and has created several other raw recipe books that I myself love. If you’re looking for a new approach, a fresh outlook, and lots of inspiration, Plant Food is for you. It focuses on using natural wild foods as opposed to hothouse produce. In fact, you probably wouldn’t have access to a few of these ingredients, like chanterelles (mushrooms), puntarelle (chickory), or wood sorrel in a hothouse. I was also introduced to a new spice, ras el hanout powder, which is a mixture of dozens of spices like cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, paprika, peppercorns, turmeric, and oodles more.

The recipes are grouped by different procedures: found, let, sprouted, spun, dried, smoked, sealed, cured, pressed, fermented, aged, sweetened, blended, and juiced, and make soups, salads, cheeses, main courses, desserts, and drinks. The book is filled with visually stimulating photos that are culinary works of art.

I admit there are several ingredients that I don’t have in my home, but I’m very open to learning and trying new things. I naturally gravitated toward recipes that sounded delicious and/ or I had the ingredients for, this lead me first to the desserts. The Maca Sorbet is divine! It’s an uber creamy sorbet that is so delicious. I used a blender instead of an ice cream machine and it turns out great. You will also need a dehydrator to make the salted maple almonds ahead of time. Many of the recipes call for a little prep work or planning ahead time.

Plant Food is a more refined, grown-up, yet edgier recipe book. It will definitely take you out of your comfort zone but in a very pleasing way. It’s also very informative and has helped me with food combinations. It’s a must for your culinary collection.
